Phrasal Verbs for the day. Staying in.

Image result for funny staying in     Staying in.

Last week I themed the phrasal verb post to 'going out' and this week I will do something similar and look at phrasal verbs related to staying in (there are a lot of word with 'stay').

As you can imagine there are fewer verbs for this activity and so I will put in other language related to the theme.

To Stay in (Intransitive). Remain at home. Not go out.

I'm really tired. I think I'll stay in tonight.

To Have or Get an early night (actually a collocation not a phrasal verb). Go to bed early.

To Have or Get  a late night (again a collocation not a phrasal verb). Go to bed late.

I've been going out a lot. I think I'd better have an early night.

To Stay or Sleep over (Intransitive). Spend an evening at someones house ('a sleepover' is when a group of people spend the evening at someones house- popular with teenagers).

It's going to be a late night you can stay over at out place if you want.

To Go or Come over (Intransitive). Depending on which direction you are moving. Visit.

What time are they coming over?
I said we'd go over at about 7.30.

To stay awake (a collocation not a phrasal verb). To deliberately not go to sleep.

I'm really tired but I want to stay awake until they arrive.

To Stay off (Transitive). Not attend something- usually work or school.

I'm ill and have to stay off school for a week.

To Stay up (Intransitive). Not go to bed early.

There was a sleep over at our place and they stayed up until 3.00 AM.

To Call (a)round. or To Pop in (Intransitive) . Informal way to say that you visit someone.

If you're home. I'll pop in later.

Just in case you didn't think English was complicated enough my friend David Dudman found an interesting link with other stuff about English.
