Linking Sentences and Paragraphs.

Last week we looked at how to write topic sentences and create paragraphs around them. In today's mini-lesson I am going to talk about connecting ideas so that they are cohesive and logical. 

As I said, each paragraph has a topic and we you use these linking words to give: times, sequences, examples, reasons, results and make contrasts. These words are used in paragraphs and to link one paragraph with another.

Below you will see a table with a few linking words.
There are two main types. Those which link clauses- example 1) subject + verb & subject + verb, or those which link a clause & a noun phrase (adverb or adj or article+ noun), example 2)

Australia is a beautiful country although it  is very hot
Sub     +       verb                                          Sub + verb

Australia is a beautiful country despite the heat
          Sub     +       verb                                                  Noun Phrase


Function
Connects Clause + Clause.
Connects Clause + Noun (Phrase).
Followed by an Infinitive.
Addition.
And. Furthermore. Moreover. Likewise. Additionally/in addition. Also. Too. Besides.
And.

Contrasting.
Although/even though/though. Despite the fact (that).  On the other hand. Conversely. Nevertheless. Whereas. In contrast.
Despite/in spite of. Despite being + adjective.

Reason.
Because. For this reason. Therefore. As. Since.
Because of
So as to. In order to. Due to.
Result.
Consequently. Thus. As a result. As a consequence. So.


Time or Sequence.
Firstly/secondly/next/then/
after that.
Meanwhile. While. Afretwards. Prior to (+..ing)
